Storytimes honor German heritage

LA CRESCENTA -- Oktoberfest will stretch beyond the boundaries of

Montrose on Friday and Saturday, as the La Crescenta Library holds

two story-time hours themed after the annual event.

Preschool and family story-times will consist of German folk tales

and harvest stories to celebrate Oktoberfest, the Montrose-Verdugo

City Chamber of Commerce's German celebration.

Preschool story time begins at 10 a.m. and family story time

begins at 2 p.m. The library is at 4521 La Crescenta Ave.

Descanso demonstrates versatility of vines

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- There are many different types of vines,

and many of them will be discussed at Descanso Gardens on Saturday.

Horticulturist Wen-Pihn Wang will demonstrate how to grow certain

vines, including Boston ivy and grape. Vines for all seasons and

decor will be discussed during the "Versatile Vines" presentation.

The presentation will be at 10 a.m. in the center circle at

Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive. It is free with garden

admission. Admission is $5, seniors and students are $3, children are

$1 and guild members are free. For more information, call 949-4200.

Oak tree to be removed

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- An appeal made by a local resident to city

staff to save a city-owned oak tree in his front yard has been

withdrawn.

Brian Thompson agreed to the removal of the tree after arborists

hired by him and the city met to determine the likelihood of the

tree's survival, and potential liability issues were discussed. It

was determined that the tree posed a safety hazard and will be

removed, Thompson said at a Sept. 23 City Council meeting.

The city will replace the two trees with an as-yet undetermined

size of tree.

Preschool program offered by YMCA

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The Crescenta-Canada YMCA offers a

child-care program for preschool children at the Verdugo Hills Family

YMCA.

The Learning Tree is a licensed preschool that offers programs

such as an introduction to reading and phonics and recreational

activities for children 2 to 5.

The preschool is open from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through

Friday, and offers a full preschool program from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Verdugo Hills Family YMCA is at 6840 Foothill Blvd., Tujunga. For

Self-guided garden tours at event

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The Acorn Bear series continues Oct 4, at
