Solar-powered flutist appears at Descanso

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Descanso Gardens will host a solar-powered

flute concert inspired by seven species of birds.

Performing selections from his new album, "Under the Oaks," with

all solar-powered equipment will be Jon Sherman. The songs were

inspired by birds associated with the oak forests of the Arroyo Seco

watershed.

The concert begins at 1 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Under the Oaks Theater

at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive. The concert is free with

garden admission.

Budget revisions adopted by LCUSD

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The La Canada Unified School District

Governing Board unanimously approved revisions to the 2002-2003

budget.

Revisions were made based on larger enrollment numbers than

projected and the state budget. No major changes were made to the

budget, which the board adopted in June, except for the loss or a

$63,000 grant to be used to purchase technological equipment for La

Canada High School.

The board also unanimously adopted a budget calendar dictating the

timeline for the 2002-03 budget preparation.

LCUSD approves Red Ribbon Week

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The La Canada Unified School District has

unanimously deemed the week of Oct. 23 Red Ribbon Week.

Activities for the week will be funded by each school site budget.

Red Ribbon Week is in observance of the national Red Ribbon Campaign,

and promotes a commitment to healthy, drug-free lifestyles.

Red Ribbon Week activities will also encourage students, parents

and district employees to wear red ribbons in honor of drug abuse

awareness. Activities will end Oct. 31.

Boddy House features ceramics, clay pieces

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Four artists will have works on display at

the Boddy House Gallery through Oct. 24.

Shirley Flynn will display her oil painting exhibit titled

"Splendor and Glory of Color," Jean Sherman will display her clay

animal figurines, and Lynn Hendricks will display ceramic pieces.

Russell Hobbs makes his debut at the gallery with pen-and-ink

drawings of historical American landmarks.

The Boddy House Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive.
