The La Canada Gladiators improved to 3-0 with a 37-13 win Sunday
against the Whittier Redskins at Sierra Educational Center in
Whittier. The Gladiators were led by quarterback Ricky Vaughns, who
scored five touchdowns.
In the first quarter, the Gladiators took the ball on their first
possession and marched downfield. Vaughns had a key run of 35 yards
and scored on a 15-yard touchdown run. After Antoine Sutphen slammed
into the end zone on the extra point to make it 7-0.
The Gladiator defense, led by defensive linemen Darius Clash,
Maxim Foster, Randy Mancilla and Kevin Cooper dominated the line of
scrimmage, while linebacker Joey Dowling had several key tackles and
forced a fumble.
Brent West anchored the cornerbacks. On the Gladiators' next
possession, fullback Eugene Gandara had a key run and Vaughns capped
the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Schloessmann to
extend the lead to 13-0.
In the second quarter, the Gladiator offense continued to grind
out yards on the ground. Jordan Pinsky and Doug Pinsky shared the
work with Andrew Carcich, who scored on a 17-yard run to make it
19-0.
The third quarter saw the Gladiator offense again dominate on the
ground, with Vaughns scoring from 11 yards out to extend the
Gladiator lead to 26-6. Greg Moore made a strong defensive play for
the Gladiators on the ensuing possession.
JR. PEE WEE
The Gladiators immediately clicked Sunday, jumping to a 13-0 lead.
Then the Gladiators yielded 26 unanswered points in a 26-13 loss to
the Whittier Redskins at Sierra Educational Center in Whittier.
Both defenses came out strong in the first quarter, but in their
second possession the Gladiators, led by the running of Ryan Martinez
and Raheem Broadnex, scored a touchdown. Behind the blocking of
center Russell Newton, and linemen John Chavez, Marcus Tucker and
Kevin Hernandez, Martinez and Broadnex ran well.
Broadnex scored on a 16-yard run to give the Gladiators a 6-0
lead. The swarming Gladiator defense held the Redskins in check for
most of the first half, led by Daniel Alamillo, Ben Childs, James
Ortiz, Mac Musso, Luke Gunter and Matthew Zilinski.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Redskins fumbled near
midfield. Two plays later, Martinez dashed around left end for a
55-yard touchdown to make it 13-0.
