Five area playoff teams still alive

Of the 13 local playoff teams that qualified for the CIF Southern

Section playoffs, five still remain alive in their bid to win CIF

championships.

Here's a brief synopsis at what the local boys' water polo, girls'

tennis, girls' volleyball and boys' and girls' cross-country squads

will face today:

BOYS' WATER POLO

Rowland Heights Rowland (23-8) vs. Flintridge Prep (21-6) at

Pasadena City College, noon: The Rebels have scored 29 goals in their

two Division VI playoff matches. Nick Seaver scored a match-high 12

goals in Flintridge Prep's 17-6 second-round win against Anaheim

Savanna on Thursday. Seaver tallied five goals in a 12-5 first-round win against Palos Verdes on Tuesday.

Rowland received nine goals from Issac Bernal in its 19-14

second-round victory against Covina Charter on Thursday.

Pico Rivera El Rancho (19-9) vs. La Canada (18-10) at Pasadena

City College, 1:30 p.m.: The second-seeded Spartans opened the

Division III playoffs Thursday with a 17-11 win against Cerritos.

They received a balanced scoring attack from Stephen Neville, Peter

Blanton, Eric Murphy, Jordan Thompson and Chris Wehrle.

Andy Ibarra produced eight goals for El Rancho on Thursday in its

14-8 first-round win against Santa Monica.

GIRLS' TENNIS

Crescenta Valley (17-1) at La Quinta (15-4), 1:30 p.m.:

Temperatures in the Coachella Valley might reach around 85 degrees

today and the Falcons will look to remain hot with in their singles

play. The Falcons, winners of 11 consecutive matches, won eight of

their nine singles sets during a 16-2 first-round Division II match

against La Canada on Thursday.

La Quinta, which finished second in the Desert Valley League

behind top-seeded Palm Desert, posted a 10-8 first-round victory

against Murrieta Valley. The winner will meet Santa Barbara or San

Marino in a quarterfinal match Tuesday.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (18-4) at Santa Monica St. Monica

(17-8), 7 p.m.: The second-seeded Tologs will look to continue their

quest for a Division IVAA championship for the first time since 1997.

Flintridge Sacred Heart will be led by outside hitter Jillian

Davis and setter Kacey Knauf, who recorded 23 assists in Thursday's

first-round win against Lancaster Paraclete.

St. Monica, which captured the Camino Real championship, posted a

come-from-behind, first-round victory against Santa Maria St. Joseph.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (21-4) at La Canada (17-13), 7

p.m.: Some reward that the Spartans will get after bouncing Ojai

Nordhoff on Thursday in a Division IIIA first-round match. The

Spartans will face second-seeded Harvard-Westlake, which won the

state Division III title last season and have ousted the Spartans

from the postseason the past two years.

La Canada, which finished second in the Rio Hondo League, received

a career-high 20 kills and six blocks Thursday from Suzanne Swenson.

The Wolverines swept La Puente Bishop Amat in their first-round

match.

CROSS-COUNTRY PRELIMS

La Canada, Flintridge Prep, St. Francis and CV will compete in the

boys' competition of the CIF prelims at Mount San Antonio College in

Walnut.

La Canada, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Holy Family, CV and

Hoover will run in the girls' competition.
