First night of Hanukkah observed

GLENDALE -- Temple Sinai of Glendale will observe the first night

of Hanukkah with a service at 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at the temple. The

service will be led by Rabbi Jonathan Biatch and Cantor Bradley

Hyman.

Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the ancient Israelite army

against the more powerful Syrian-Greek nation, which tried to

eliminate Jewish and other minority forms of religious worship.

The holiday also remembers the miracle of the oil used for the

Temple Lamp that lasted eight times longer than was thought.

There will be a Oneg Shabbat (fellowship hour) after the service.

Everyone is welcome to attend. The temple is at 1212 N. Pacific

Ave., Glendale. For more information, call 246-8101.

Galleria to host Hanukkah celebration

GLENDALE -- Glendale Galleria and the Chabad of Glendale and the

foothills communities are co-sponsoring a community Hanukkah

celebration with a menorah kindling ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at

the Galleria.

Following the lighting of a giant menorah, festivities will

include Jewish music performed by musicians, clowns, balloons, gifts

and treats.

Known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah symbolizes a universal

message that good will prevail over evil, freedom over oppression and

light over darkness.

Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting the menorah each night of the

holiday for eight nights. The menorah will be on display Nov. 28 to

Dec. 8.

First Thanksgiving remembered at service

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Church of the Lighted Window, the

congregational church of the Pilgrims, will have a special

celebration of the 381st anniversary of the first American

Thanksgiving at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Each worshipper will be provided with a handmade cloth Pilgrim

collar to wear during the service. Pastor Skip Lindeman will conduct

the worship hour. The chancel choir will enter, Plymouth-style, to

the beat of a drum singing "Rejoice, Be Glad, Give Praise" by Dale

Wood. Joseph Klice will play organ and piano music.

The church is at 1200 Foothill Blvd. in La Canada Flintridge. For

more information, call 790-1185.
