Sword play is tip of the iceberg at 'Princess Bride' screening

Fairy-tale princesses, giants and wizards all make appearances in

Rob Reiner's 1987 "The Princess Bride," showing at 2 p.m. today at

The Alex Theatre in Glendale.

The film is based on the novel by William Goldman and is about the

beautiful Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn), who is in love with

a handsome farm boy Westley (Cary Elwes). But the nefarious Prince

Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) kidnaps her and plans to marry her.

Live entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. featuring the Musical

Angels, an instrumental group associated with the Glendale Youth

Orchestra, costumed fairy-tale greeters, arts and crafts and an

on-stage sword fight by members of the Los Angeles Fight Academy.

Audience members are encouraged to wear costumes of their favorite

fairy-tale character or adventure hero to participate in a parade

across the stage prior to the screening.

There will be a drawing for a book of fairy tales and a book

drive. Participants bringing a gently used book to donate will

receive $1 off their admission. Books will be donated to the Glendale

Public Library.

Tickets are $7.50, $5 for children. The Alex Theatre is at 216 N.

CONDUCTOR IS SOLOIST FOR CHAMBER CONCERT

Jeffrey Kahane will be conductor and soloist with the Los Angeles

Chamber Orchestra in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major,

beginning at 8 tonight at The Alex Theatre in Glendale.

Young soprano Elissa Johnston will perform Bach's Wedding Cantata

and the sensuous prose of Joyce's Ulysses -- as set by Stephen Albert

in "Flower of the Mountain." Johnston has appeared in the season-

opening performances of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Esa Pekka

Salonen, as well as with the Atlanta Symphony, St. Paul Chamber

Orchestra, Santa Rosa Symphony and the San Francisco Contemporary

Players.

Kahane and the orchestra will bring the program to a melodic

climax with Schubert's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major.

Kahane will present Words on Music, a 30-minute talk on the

program, free to all ticket holders one hour before the concert.

Tickets range from $15 to $63 and are available at the box
