La Canada High up for state honor

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- La Canada High School appears to be on its

way to becoming a California Distinguished School for the second

time.

The school has been nominated to receive the honor. A site visit

by judges tentatively scheduled for next week will determine if the

award will be bestowed.

To be selected for recognition, La Canada High administrators had

to complete an application giving examples the school had met the

criteria for the award. Criteria include high academic expectations

for all students, comprehensive guidance and counseling programs at

all grade levels and programs that foster healthy behaviors. The site

visit is to determine the accuracy of the application.

La Canada High School earned the honor of a California

Distinguished School and a Blue Ribbon School in the early 1990s.

Board member receives award

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- La Canada Unified School District board

member Jinny Dalbeck has been selected as the local recipient of the

Assn. of California School Administrators Golden Apple Award.

Members of the district's administration team selected Dalbeck.

She will be presented with the award at a meeting today. Supt. Sue

Leabo said she thought it was the first time an active board member

had been chosen for the honor.

New director hired by school district

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The La Canada Unified School District has

hired Enoch Kwok as its new director of technology, curriculum and

special projects.

Kwok is a teacher specialist for educational technology for the

Glendale Unified School District, and is a former physics and

geosciences teacher at Crescenta Valley High School. He begins April

1.

New members inducted to club

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- The Kiwanis Club of La Canada Flintridge,

A.M. has inducted three new members.

Marilyn Cable, John Olsen and Bruce Johnson were given club aprons

at their induction March 5, symbolic of the group's mission to serve

youth and the community.

Hour for peace planned Sunday

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Local churches and residents will hold a

peace vigil Sunday at Memorial Park.

Participants will light a candle for peace. An hour of prayer and

petition for wisdom and grace in a troubled time will also be held.

The event is from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial Park is at 1201 Foothill

Blvd. Participants should bring a candle.
