GCC students to march in state capital

NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- Eight student government representatives

from Glendale Community College will fly to Sacramento on Monday to

participate in the "March in March."

Several thousand community college students are expected to attend

the massive protest rally, which could be the largest demonstration

of its kind in the history of California community colleges,

organizers said.

The Associated Students of GCC will spend about $1,700 in student government funds to send the eight representatives, said Alen

Andriassian, the group's advisor.

Students plan to attend a morning protest and have made

appointments to visit several legislators, including State Sen. Jack

Scott (D-Glendale) and Assemblyman Dario Frommer (D-Glendale).

"It's pretty bad," Andriassian said. "Students feel their

education is being compromised by the state budget deficit. We feel

too much of the weight is on community colleges."

Dreier, others call for financial literacy month

LA CRESCENTA -- A resolution calling for a month dedicated to the

financial literacy of children was introduced by Rep. David Dreier

(La Crescenta), along with several others from a bipartisan group of

lawmakers.

The idea of the resolution is to bring about more awareness of the

need for children to learn rudimentary financial skills, Dreier said.

April would be a good month for the designation because Americans are

focused on their finances because of the income-tax period, Dreier

said.
