VERNE CARLSON

Verne Carlson, 76, a cinematographer, author, teacher and former

longtime Glendale resident, died Feb. 5, 2003, at his Port Hueneme

home.

Mr. Carlson was born April 8, 1926, in Bridgeport, Conn.

During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 and was

assigned reconnaissance duty at various Pacific locations.

He began his 45-year career in the industry at Warner Bros.

Studios in 1946 as a grip, and gradually became a highly respected

technical source.

He was a member of the International Cinematographers Guild Local

600 for 35 years and wrote many articles for American Cinematographer

and Film World. He was also a contributing editor for International

Photographer.

He was an associate professor at Cal State Long Beach and lectured

at Moorpark College and Columbia College. His "Cowboy Cookbook" was

selected by the Library of Congress and the U.S. State Department as

a historical document of Western Americana.

He is survived by his companion, Jean Lewis; sisters, Karen Baird

and Diane Neville; and brother, Ralph Carlson.

Guardian Memorial was in charge of the cremation.

DOROTHY LEONARD GILDEA

Dorothy Leonard Gildea, 92, a former longtime Glendale resident,

died March 15, 2003, in Irvine.

She was born in Indianapolis.

She graduated from UC Berkeley, where she met her husband, Patrick

Gildea.

The couple lived for 40 years in Glendale, where she was involved

in the American Assn. of University Women and the Girl Scouts.

Following her husband's death, she moved to Leisure Work, where

she was active in AAUW, the Aliso Club and the Retired Economists

Assn. She had recently lived at Freedom Village in Lake Forest.

She is survived by her son, Robert Patrick; daughters, Kathleen

Lundstrom and Susan Soderberg; 11 grandchildren and four

great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday at Mission San

Fernando.

Burial will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
