Police losing veteran after 28 years

A veteran of the Glendale Police Department will say his farewells

today as he retires from a community he served for 28 years.

Sgt. Rich Navarro, a sworn police officer since April 24, 1975,

was commended several times during his tenure with the department.

Glendale Police Chief Randy Adams noted Navarro "excelled as an

investigator and left no stones unturned," in a statement released to

the department regarding Navarro's retirement.

Navarro served as president of the Glendale Police Officer's Assn.

and was credited with helping the group obtain many of the medical

benefits offered to its members.

Navarro was commended in 1986 by then Glendale Fire Chief John

Montenero after he helped 25 occupants trapped on the upper floors of

a burning building.

Navarro, his wife and his children -- who all attended Crescenta

Valley High School -- live in La Crescenta.
