APPLICATIONS FOR ARTS IN EDUCATION FUNDING

WHAT HAPPENED

The City Council adopted a resolution approving an application for

an Arts in Education Demonstration Project grant of nearly $90,000

from the California Arts Council. The money will fund a series of

cooperative projects between the city and the Glendale Unified School

District. If successful, it will mark the third successive year of

funding for the program.

WHAT IT MEANS

The program partners the school district and the city's Arts and

Culture Commission in facilitating of professional development

projects for teachers and artists. It also helps create workshops for

sixth-grade students for testing the use of animation skills to

improve reading comprehension. The projects are part of a statewide

campaign to address arts in education for public schools.

VOTE

The council voted 5-0 in favor.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE DISCLOSURE THRESHOLDS

WHAT HAPPENED

The City Council directed city staff on a draft ordinance to lower

the threshold for campaign contribution disclosures from $100 to $50

for candidates for city council, city treasurer and city clerk. The

ordinance was introduced by Councilman Gus Gomez in January to

prevent contributions just under the limit to avoid disclosure.

WHAT IT MEANS

The ordinance would go into effect July 1. Federal and state law

allow local government to place further regulations on candidates

running for offices under their jurisdictions. The amendment would

not affect candidates for the Glendale Unified School District Board

of Education or the Glendale Community College governing board.

Violations would be listed as an infraction under the Municipal Code.

VOTE

No vote was required.
