Healthy Patriotism is subject of sermon

GLENDALE -- "Healthy Patriotism" is senior pastor Wayne Walters'

topic during the service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the First United

Methodist Church.

Walters will proclaim the gospel of how God's good news in Christ

challenges us to love our country in ways that help it to live out

its truest principles and values of the Declaration of Independence.

Music will be provided by Ladd Thomas, organist, and the Summer

Choir.

Vacation Bible School begins at 9 a.m. July 13 and continues each

Sunday through Aug. 10. This year's activities include cross-cultural

storytelling, crafts, games and Bible studies. "Under the Baobab

Tree" highlights how every part of the Earth, and each of us in our

diversity, is to be valued. Call the church to register.

Independence is theme for talk

GLENDALE -- "Declare Your Independence" is the theme of the Sunday

talk by Rev. Marilyn Jensen-Johnson at the Religious Science Church

of Glendale, which meets at the YWCA, 735 E. Lexington Ave.

Meditation is at 9:30 a.m., and service and Sunday school are at

10 a.m. A six-week workshop on prosperity will begin Monday at the

church.

Youngsters can join Vacation Bible Schools

GLENDALE -- Vacation Bible Schools are scheduled in three local

Adventist churches. Admission is free. For more information, call

B.I.B.L.E. Academy, a basic interplanetary Bible learning

expedition for children and their parents, is offered from 6 to 8:30

p.m. through Aug. 14 at the Glendale City Adventist Church, 610 E.

California Ave., Glendale. For more information, call 244-7241.

Treasures of the Nile Vacation Bible School will be from 6:30 to

8 p.m. Monday through July 19 at Glendale Filipino Adventist Church,

606 S. Louise St., Glendale. The program closes with a graduation

Jesus' Kids in the Kitchen Vacation Bible School with an emphasis

on health is from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through July 11 at La

Crescenta Adventist Church, 6235 Honolulu Ave., La Crescenta. Free

Two honored at Spirit of America ceremony

GLENDALE -- Jennifer Russell of Montrose and David F. King of

Burbank will be honored during the free Fourth of July "Spirit of

America Celebration" at 9 a.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ

of Latter-day Saints, 1101 N. Central Ave.

Russell, director of Glendale's Character & Ethics Kids Choir, is

being honored for her work with the youth choir, whose purpose is to

promote unity in the community. The choir will perform during the

celebration.

King is past president of the Kiwanis Club of Burbank, past

president of the Verdugo Hills Council of Boy Scouts of America and a

founding member of Leadership Burbank.
