Nitros run out of steam, 57-32

July 31, 2003

An energy crunch affected the Glendale High girls' basketball team.

There weren't any productive offensive strides, resulting in a

blackout.

That confused Glendale Coach Fred Babadjanians, who watched the

Nitros on Wednesday score a meager 12 second-half points in a 57-32

loss to Oxnard in an opening-round game of the 19th annual

Glendale (11-13) will meet L.A. Bishop Conaty-Loretto in a

consolation game at 1 p.m. today. Oxnard (24-6) will face Oak Park in

a championship quarterfinal contest at 5 p.m.

"We ran out of gas," Babadjanians said. "We got the shots we

wanted, but they didn't fall, and we were completely off our game.

"We normally average about 12 or 14 fast-break points per game,

and I think we had maybe two or four [Wednesday]."

Glendale's fast-break points occurred late in the first half,

helping the Nitros pull to 26-20 at halftime.

Somebody forgot to tell the Nitros that a second half still needed

to be played. Oxnard didn't face that dilemma.

Oxnard limited Glendale to one point midway through the third

quarter, and relied on center Amber Jackson and forward Nadine

Isaguirre for offensive support.

"We threw everything at [Jackson] defensively, including

double-teaming and triple-teaming her," Babadjanians said.

Glendale received six points from guard Serineh Haghverdian.

"We aren't clicking and working together," Haghverdian said.

"Everybody is out there doing their own things.

"I'm frustrated, and we'll have to learn to work together."
