An elderly woman was recovering Monday from a broken leg after her

husband inadvertently accelerated and pinned her under his car.

The couple, who are in their 70s, were at Savon at 2037 Verdugo

Blvd. about 8:30 p.m. Sunday as the driver tried to inch into a

parking space, Glendale Police Lt. Don Meredith said. The driver did

not hit the store and police did not release his name, or his wife's

name.

The woman was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena in

critical condition, but she has since improved and will be

transferred to a local hospital for surgery, Meredith said.

Concern for the driving abilities of elderly people has spiked

since 86-year-old Russell Weller of Santa Monica plowed through the

Santa Monica Farmers' Market on July 16, killing 10 people and

injuring several others. Charges are reportedly pending against

Weller.

Meredith said hitting the gas instead of the brake is not

uncommon.

"These kind of accidents are not all that unusual," he said. "The

Santa Monica case kind of brought attention to it."
