Two women suspected of trying to run down a Glendale Police officer

after a short pursuit are scheduled to be arraigned today on charges

of attempted murder.

Sharon Anne Markley, 58, of Los Angeles, and Debra Jean Lange, 47,

of Beverly Hills, were arrested late Monday after leaving Nordstrom

Rack at 227 N. Glendale Ave. Officers were called to the store to

investigate a report of a theft in progress, and saw two women

leaving the location in a car that matched a description, Glendale

Police spokeswoman Officer Leticia Chang said.

The two women allegedly fled into a dead-end alley off Glendale

Avenue. When an officer ordered the pair out of their car, Markley

backed up in an alleged attempt to run the officer over, Chang said.

The officer fired five shots at the car, but Markley and Lange

were not hit. As the women tried to leave the alley, another police

unit forcibly ran their car off the road, Chang said. Markley tried

to escape on foot but was arrested shortly after. Lange was arrested

at the scene.

It was not known Tuesday whether any stolen merchandise or weapons

were in the women's possession, Chang said.

Markley, who has also used the name Dawn Jean Vargas, was also

wanted for a traffic warrant and for failing to appear in court for a

charge of receiving stolen property, according to jail records.

Markley was being held Tuesday on $1-million bail at Glendale

City jail. Lange was being held on $500,000 bail.

The officer, whose name was not released, was treated for minor

injuries at Glendale Adventist Medical Center and released, Chang

said.
