First-grade students at Balboa Elementary School learned the ins and

outs of dental hygiene Monday when Glendale Unified School District

Vice President Greg Krikorian taught a program sponsored by Glendale

Healthy Kids.

Using a Betsy the Cow hand puppet, Krikorian demonstrated proper

brushing technique and stressed the importance of brushing every day.

The students took turns brushing Betsy's oversized teeth with a

toothbrush, and watched a video about a giraffe that learns the

importance of brushing.

For many of the students, brushing their teeth was old news. "I

always brush my teeth because my mommy makes me, but I didn't know

you can brush a cow's teeth," Alexandra Howell said.

Krikorian taught three classes Monday, and is scheduled to teach

two more when Balboa, a year-round school, enters another track in

January.

Glendale Healthy Kids programs are taught by parents who

volunteer, Balboa Principal Linda Milano said. Krikorian's daughter,

Seran, is a first-grader at the school.
