Glendale win marred by near-brawl afterward

December 13, 2003

The Glendale High boys' basketball team didn't have much time to

savor its huge, 63-61, nonleague victory against visiting Burroughs

on Friday night.

Because as the teams were shaking hands after the game, some words

were apparently said, and a Glendale player allegedly punched a

Burroughs player, resulting in a near brawl between the two teams and

the fans in attendance.

Fortunately, such ugliness never materialized, but the post-game

altercation cast a shadow on Glendale's impressive win against a

squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of last year's CIF Southern

Section Division IIA playoffs.

"Neither [Burroughs Coach Art Sullivan] or I feel good about what

happened there," Nitro Coach Steve Snodgress said. "Emotions ran a

little too high tonight."

In a game that featured Glendale's Wesley Woodcock getting his

nose broken by the elbow of Burroughs' Joey Paysinger in the fourth

quarter, the Nitros (4-1) were able to overcome a nine-point deficit

after one quarter to drop Burroughs to 2-4 on the season.

Glendale's Egiche Sahakyan came up huge in the waning moments.

With his team trailing by one with 40 seconds left, the senior hit

a three-pointer, then stole the ball, which led to him making a pair

of free throws to ice the game.

Sahakyan finished with 17 points, as did teammate Raymond

Dagher. Woodcock added 14 for the Nitros.

Paysinger led Burroughs with 26, including 13 in the first

quarter. Four of his seven three-pointers also came in the first

period.
