Hoover shocks Pasadena on road

Hoover 47, Pasadena 43: The Tornadoes (6-10) won one of their

biggest Pacific League games in recent years, upsetting the

back-to-back league champion Friday night in their league opener on

the road.

Ignacio Diaz, who scored seven points, made two free throws with

six seconds remaining to clinch the win for Hoover, which plays at

Crescenta Valley at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Andy Shaknazaryan hit four three-pointers, finishing with 12

points. Freshman Zareh Zargaryan added six points and 10 rebounds

and Romik Abolian had six assists.

St. Francis 57, West Hills Chaminade 56: The Golden Knights pulled

off the big Mission League road victory Friday night, as Scott

Burton made a free throw with 3.8 seconds left, and Chaminade missed

a desperation 40-footer as time expired.

Chris Johnson had 18 points and Dean Grimes added 17 points -- on

seven-of-seven shooting -- and seven rebounds for St. Francis (9-5,

1-1 in league).

Kevin Peterson contributed eight points and nine rebounds, and

Steve Polchow added seven points, as did Burton, for the Golden

Knights, who were up by two points late in the contest when Chaminade

tied it with 15 seconds left, before Burton got fouled.

La Canada 88, Temple City 56: The Spartans scored 35 points in the

third quarter en route to an easy victory in their Rio Hondo League

opener at Temple City.

Philip Anderson had 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocked

shots, Umar Khan added 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists,

Rhett Anderson tallied 16 points and five rebounds, and Ryan

Cosgrove contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for La

Canada (14-2).

Craig Ballard had six points and Colin McQuay added five points

for the Spartans, who made seven three-point field goals.

Flintridge Prep 63, Rancho Palos Verdes Chadwick 49: Ramses Barden

led the Rebels with 18 points in Friday night's Prep League opener at

Chadwick (7-8).

Andrew Beck added 10 points and Tim Mercer contributed eight

points for Flintridge Prep (8-5), which broke the game open with a

42-20 run in the second and third quarters, including 25 points in

the third.

The Rebels return to league action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Arcadia

Rio Hondo Prep.

BOYS' SOCCER

St. Francis 2, West Hills Chaminade 1: Despite surrendering a

goal to Chaminade's Chris Estu five minutes into Friday's road

match, the Golden Knights rallied for two first-half goals to

improve to 14-4, 2-0 in Mission League.

Chris Hertz tied it in the 20th minute with a left-footed shot on
