Police on Wednesday asked for the public's help in identifying the

shooter of a 20-year-old Glendale man who was driving to meet his

brother and later died.

Dwayne Alfred Winfield Jr. was sitting in his car at the

intersection of Lark Ellen Avenue and Gladstone Street in Azusa about

6:45 p.m. Tuesday when witnesses say several shots were fired from

another car, Azusa Police Lt. Jeff Reed said. Winfield, who was

struck by a bullet, drove a quarter-mile west on Gladstone to escape

the gunfire before crashing into a telephone pole at Aspan Avenue,

Reed said.

Winfield was taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in nearby

Glendora, where he later died. Investigators from the Los Angeles

County coroner's office will determine whether Winfield died from the

gunshot or the car crash, Reed said.

There are very few leads in the case, which police are

investigating as a homicide, Reed said.

"Anything is possible," he said. "We don't have any indication of

anything. It could be anything, from road rage to whatever else it

could be. But we don't think it was road rage."

Winfield was apparently driving to meet his brother, who was

waiting in a nearby neighborhood, police said. Winfield's family

could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the

Azusa Police Department at (626) 812-3200.
