Antonovich steps in on tree issue

February 04, 2004

L.A. County Supervisor Michael Antonovich has directed the Department

of Public Works to assist the Crescenta Valley Water District in

replacing trees it removed from public land adjacent to its

headquarters.

Residents did not want the California coastal oaks the water

district was going to plant, Antonovich spokeswoman Sussy Nemar said.

The county will work with community members and the water district to

draw up a list of trees that the community prefers. Residents can

call Antonovich's office at (213) 974-5555 with suggestions.

The water district angered residents last month when it cut down

11 mature pine trees and jacarandas without making public the

decision. Removing the trees was part of the district's plan to

change the landscaping around its property by adding California

native and drought-resistant plants.
