Despite trailing by eight points entering the fourth quarter and
shooting 15 of 27 from the free-throw line, Jordan's squad rallied to
knock off visiting Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 70-67, on "Senior Night"
at St. Francis High.
"This is just a real nice win," said Jordan, whose squad (13-10,
5-6 in league) put itself in good position to earn no worse than a
fourth-place tie with West Hills Chaminade (11-15, 4-7), which would
mean an automatic bid into the CIF Southern Section Division IIIA
"The last two games we've had to make real good fourth-quarter
runs, and we're playing with a little more poise and confidence.
"We're so much more mentally tough than we were last year, and I'm

After Notre Dame's Orlando Baeza -- who finished with a game-high
23 points in the setback, which dropped his team to 14-10, 6-5 --
scored the opening basket of the final quarter, St. Francis
responded with a nine-point run to take the lead with less than five
For the next two minutes the teams traded leads, until Steve
Polchow hit a clutch three-pointer to give Jordan's squad -- which
was led by 17 points and seven assists from Scott Burton and 16
points each from Chris Johnson (four assists) and Kevin Peterson (10
rebounds) -- a 64-62 lead with 2:08 remaining.
"It was real important to get this one," said senior Tim
Dietrich, who had nine points and nine rebounds, as he and Johnson
combined to hit three of four free throws in the final 14 seconds to
seal the victory.
"It feels great to win like this because it's been a while [since
we've won 13 games]. We've worked real hard for this and it feels
