Let's market our city for the jewel it actually is

March 16, 2004

If we're going to build a Town Center to house more retail and

restaurants, let's shoot for more than Target, for goodness sake.

There's a Target in every adjacent city surrounding us (Eagle Rock,

Pasadena, Burbank), and I'm not suggesting a Wal-Mart, either. There

are plenty of regular shops in the Galleria and throughout the city

that meet most of our needs.

If we'd like to create a special, attractive ambience with common

grounds, fountains and a park to attract people from everywhere, we

deserve to glow with more high-end retail and restaurants that will

make shopping and dining (even day spas) a pleasurable experience

during the day and at night. I won't get excited about another

super-size, all-purpose general store where I can buy toothpaste,

filing cabinets and a Slurpee.

More important, let's associate Glendale with a bit of luxury.

Considering the value of our commercial and residential properties,

the beauty of our hillsides and our rich history, it's time to begin

thinking about marketing Glendale as a comfortable, prosperous

community.
