Children's charities benefit from Jewel City Kiwanis Car Show

March 20, 2004

JOYCE RUDOLPH

Not only does the Jewel City Kiwanis Car Show raise funds for

children's charities, but it provides a great alternative for those

of us pining to own a classic car.

Happiness for me is gazing at a candy-apple red 1968 Chevy Camaro.

But then, a royal blue 1970 Chevy Malibu still turns my head. They

all bring back memories of growing up -- Burbank High School,

Sorrento Beach and Friday nights at Bob's Big Boy, formerly on San

Fernando Boulevard.

These cars will catch my eye along with more than 350 other

classic and collectible vehicles and trucks at this year's car show

beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday at Verdugo Park, 1621 Canada Blvd.,

Glendale.

Vying for trophies will be everything from Model Ts through the

1950s hot rods, the 1970s muscle cars as well as flashy Porsche and

Ferraris sports cars.

Spectators can buy tickets for prize drawings, bid on silent

auction items and purchase accessories to spruce up your own set of

wheels at the vendors tables.

The most recent prize donated is a 1 1/2--hour ride along for two

on a patrol flight aboard a Glendale Police helicopter.

For musical entertainment, the Jewel City Kiwanis have scheduled

the Crescenta Valley High School and Glendale High School jazz bands

to play 1940s standards and a DJ to spin classic rock 'n' roll

favorites.

The Kiwanis will bring their barbecue vehicle for cooking up

Verdugo Burgers, mesquite chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and those

yummy Kiwanis fries.

All the proceeds support the local children's charities, such as

Boy Scouts of America, YMCA, YWCA, American Red Cross, Make-A-Wish,

Glendale Little League, Glendale Handicapped Workshop and several

local elementary schools.

Admission and parking are free. To enter a car or for more

information, call Rich Jessup at 370-6930.
