Golfers and tennis players will be swinging for stray animals Monday

at the Pasadena Humane Society's fifth annual benefit at the La

Canada Flintridge Country Club.

The benefit will raise money for the animal shelter's adoption

programs. In addition to its home city, the humane society also

serves as an animal control agency to Glendale, La Canada

Flintridge, San Marino, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena and Sierra

Madre.

The goal is to raise $100,000, event organizer Mia Dunn said,

adding that last year's event raised $93,000. The event is one of the

top three fundraisers that the organization presents in order to

raise money for its $3.4-million annual operating budget. Other

events include the motorcycle ride "Hogs for Dogs" in September and

the annual Walk for the Animals in October.

More than 80% of each dollar raised during the event goes toward

animal care, spokeswoman Ricky Whitman said.

"As an open-door shelter, we take responsibility for any animal in

our service area. All animals are welcome here," she said.

Participants in the event should have a ball, organizers said.

The event will feature a golf scramble that begins at 10:30 a.m.

A doubles tennis event begins at 1 p.m. Also included will be

putting, long drive and hole-in-one contests. An awards dinner will

follow the day's activities at 5 p.m.

Participants can sign up the day of the event.

Golf packages start at $295 per person and will include tee

prizes, a barbecue lunch and admission to the awards dinner. The $75

tennis package includes courtside snacks, refreshments and dinner.

Tickets for the awards dinner only can be purchased for $65.

La Canada Flintridge Country Club is at 5500 Godbey Drive. For

information on tickets to the event, call (626) 792-7151, ext. 123.
