Local congregations observe Easter

April 09, 2004

The life Jesus Christ earned for his followers through his

crucifixion and resurrection will be commemorated this weekend as

Christians celebrate Easter.

Beginning with Maundy Thursday, Christians throughout the area

will take the bread and the wine in commemoration of the Passover

meal. Some services will also emphasize Jesus' commandment to serve

and love each other with the washing of the feet. Good Friday will

observe Jesus' crucifixion, and in some churches, Holy Saturday will

be observed. His resurrection will be celebrated on Easter Sunday.

The Holy Week, which began with Palm Sunday, is the foundation for

the Christian faith, La Canada United Methodist Church's Pastor Rob

Calderhead said.

"Without Easter, nothing else matters," he said. "If, in fact,

Jesus was not dead, then [seen] alive after that, then everything

else in Christian faith is baloney. A lot of people get wrapped up in

Christmas, but without Easter, that doesn't matter."

No matter the denomination, thousands of people are expected to

come to area churches on Easter Sunday.

"If we didn't believe in the Resurrection, we wouldn't really be a

church," said Father Paul Hruby, of Incarnation Catholic Church.

Several area churches will have special events like an art exhibit

focusing on Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection at Seventh-day

Adventist Church on Sunday, before their dinner and service. The art

exhibit features works from congregants and will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

in the church's chapel, at 300 Vallejo Drive.

Other churches, like St. Luke's of the Mountains Episcopal Church

in La Crescenta and the First Congregational Church of Glendale, will

have their Easter Sunday celebrations outdoors.
