April 16, 2004

La Crescenta resident James McGown was one of the putting contest winners at the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA's fifth annual golf and tennis benefit held April 5 at the La Cañada Country Club.

McGown, along with Ron Silveira of Meyer and Allen Associates, Architects and Planners of Los Angeles, were winners of a putting contest that was held prior to tee off for the golf event.

The contest was judged by meteorologist and La Cañada Flintridge resident Dallas Raines of KABC-Channel 7 News, who also delivered an impromptu weather report for the day.

Sierra Madre resident Scott Green became only the second person in 22 years to make a hole-in-one during an outside golf event. Using a four iron, Green aced the par 3 seventh hole to take home a Mercedes-Benz C230 provided by the RUSNAK Automotive Group of Arcadia during the "Doglegs, Birdies and Eagles: Get in the Swing" event.

Others winners included LCF resident Sandra Goodspeed whose ball landed closest to the pin on the course's sixth hole.

The tournament, presented annually by Nutro Products, Inc., raised approximately $77,000 for the humane society's adoption programs, a record for this event. The monies will be used to find loving and permanent homes for lost, injured and abandoned animals.

The Pasadena Humane Society provides animal welfare services to several cities in the area including LCF, Glendale and Pasadena.

Other sponsors of the event included Wells Fargo, Community Bank, Oak Tree Charitable Foundation, Santa Anita Park and Advantage Ford Lincoln-Mercury.

"We are just thrilled at this outpouring of support for the animals," said Event Chairman Michael Abrams. "it will help us give many, many Second Chances to the animals in our care," he added.

In addition to golf, the day's events included a mixed doubles round robin tennis tournament, an awards dinner and a spirited live auction. Pasadena resident Patricia O'Neill and Dr. Rubio Punzalan of the AMA Laboratory/Community Veterinary Laboratory in Monrovia were the winners of the tennis tournament.
