Students appreciate dirty cars

May 21, 2004|By Mary O'Keefe

Members of Lincoln Elementary School Student Council found themselves up to their elbows in water and suds for the Teacher Appreciation Car Wash Thursday, May 13.

"This is fun and the teachers really like it," said fourth-grader Johnny Malmrose.

Principal Melissa Stephan came up with the idea and approached the student council at one of their regular meetings. Stephan said that not only were the students excited about it but so were the teachers.

The students gave the teachers certificates for one free car wash each. Some teachers worried their car would be too dirty, Stephan said, but the principal and her staff of sudsers found no car too challenging to shine for their hard-working teachers. Most students were anxious to clean their own teacher's car.

Stephan not only grabbed a soapy sponge herself, but acted as valet for the cars as they pulled into the makeshift car wash. This is the first year Lincoln offered a car wash but said Stephan, "Hopefully, this will become a tradition."

In addition to the car wash, Lincoln teachers received chocolate treats on Wednesday and fruit smoothies on Thursday sponsored and prepared by the Parent and Teacher Association. On Friday they received a lunch catered by Casa De Ramos of Glendale.
