Let's get rid of

June 04, 2004

trash, weeds

Have you ever noticed the amount of papers, wrappers, tin cans, cigarette butts and other trash and weeds that greet you when you leave the 210 Freeway at Ocean View Boulevard, La Crescenta Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue here in La Crescenta? Motorists seem to find it very convenient to dispose of their trash at these off-ramps while waiting for the signal to change.

We have a great living area here in the Crescenta Valley. We enjoy and appreciate our lifestyle for many reasons. Seeing all the trash that continually accumulates at our off-ramps is a depressing sight to be greeted with as we come home from work and exit the freeway, plus it creates an unfavorable impression when visitors come to our valley.

Our community-the Town Council, merchants, restaurants, real estate agents, etc.-is working hard to create and maintain a positive and attractive image of our community. We should be able to do something positive to correct and improve this blighted and depressing condition of debris accumulation.

Can Caltrans have a more frequent clean-up schedule to not only keep the trash picked up, but to trim and remove the weeds?

Can the Town Council come up with some suggestions for attractive and creative but reasonably priced landscape enhancement at the off-ramps? Maybe these improvements would discourage motorists from dumping trash out of their cars when they wait at these exits to enter our valley.

Perhaps a discussion at a Town Council meeting on this subject would stimulate the creation of ideas and suggestions as to what can be done to clean up these areas. Advance notice of a discussion on this subject at one of their meetings would allow those of us interested to attend and participate in finding a solution to this problem.
