Gay Men's Chorus wraps up 25th season

June 11, 2004

Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles is proud to announce the final production of its historic 25th silver anniversary season, the 25th Anniversary concert, "You Made Me Love You: The Music of Judy Garland" with Dr. Bruce Mayhall conducting for his third season as artistic director.

Twenty-five years ago, almost to the day of these final concerts, on July 12, 1979, Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles was formed.

In honor of this historic occasion, the chorus will honor Judy Garland, whose death sparked the Stonewall riots, which was one of the touchstones of the modern gay and lesbian civil rights movement.

In tribute to how far the chorus and the gay and lesbian civil rights movement have come, the chorus looks back to a legend in celebration and in song.

This will be an unforgettable night of music, with the chorus singing the very best of Judy Garland's classic hits as well as medleys from her concerts and television appearances.

"It's been 35 years since Judy Garland gave her last performance - and nearly 80 since (at age 30 months) she gave her first," biographer John Fricke writes. "In the decades between those two events, she amassed a body of work astounding in its range, amazing in its power and timeless in its ability to exult, enthrall, and excite cross-generational audiences. In each medium, her legacy encompassed unsurpassed artistic and popular successes."

Performances will be July 9 and July 10 at 8 p.m., and July 11 at 3 p.m.

Ticket prices are $15, $25, $62.50 and $70 for all performances.

Terrace and orchestra seats will receive a GMCLA CD/DVD combination gift item and be part of a post-event reception. Children ages 12 and under receive special discounts. Groups from 12 to 24 receive a 10 percent discount; groups of 25 or more receive a 25 percent discount.

Tickets are available by calling the chorus office at 800- MEN-SING (636-7464) or by visiting the Alex Theatre box office at 216 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale or by calling the Alex Theatre at 243-2539.
