Floral design classes begin at Descanso Gardens

June 18, 2004

The first of three floral design classes at Descanso Gardens, taught by designer Ray Tucker, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 26.

Each class will offer a different design style, offering a fresh approach for anyone interested in taking all three.

The June 26 class will demonstrate the "Simple Pleasures" of creating a gift basket with blooming flowers.

The class July 10 will be a "Tropical Tease" resulting in an exotic arrangement, and the class July 17 will make a "Summer Splash" as participants create table centerpieces or arrangements for the pool.

In these hands-on classes, Tucker will offer step-by-step tips and techniques. These how-to classes are for both beginners and advanced designers. Students will leave each class with a professional quality creation to take home and, equally important, a sense of achievement.

Tucker has more than 30 years' experience in the flower industry. He has been involved in numerous floral events, including the Tournament of Roses and the Los Angeles County Fair Floral Exposition. He has been featured on the "Christopher Lowell Show" on the Discovery Channel. Since 1984, he has taught floral design for various educational institutions.

The fee per class is $35 (member discount applies), plus a $30 materials fee paid to the instructor at the time of the class. Reservations are requested by June 21 for June 26; July 5 for July 10 and July 12 for July 17, and may be made by calling 949-7980.

Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive in La Cañada Flintridge.

The gardens are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Admission is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors and students; $1.50 for children 5 to 12. For information, 949-4200.
