CV Falcons get a pat on the back

June 18, 2004|By Mary O'Keefe

Family and friends cheered 592 very happy seniors on as they received their high school diplomas from Crescenta Valley High School Wednesday. The ceremony was held at Stengel Ball Field, where the seniors filled the infield, and their parents, family and friends cheered from the outfield and crowded bleachers.

The orchestra began "Pomp and Circumstance," which they played over and over each time with perfection as the graduating seniors walked onto the field and took their seats.

Senior Class President Kyuhong Min, who told his fellow students to take a break from books and enjoy the fact they are graduating, welcomed them. "Let's pat each other on the back. We just graduated high school," Min said as the seniors all patted their neighbor's back.

The audience was then led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Senior Class Vice President Megan Martin, followed by a beautiful rendition of "Star Spangled Banner" led by choir members Daniel Adams, Debora Da Silva, Monica Kim, Mary La Face, Tallin Tufankjian, Seong Park and Min Ho Ryu.

The student speakers at the graduation ceremony, Michael Bayles and Lara Talverdian, were the winners of a school-sponsored speech contest. CVHS Co-Principal Linda Evans said that all seniors were eligible to compete for the honor of speaking at graduation by writing and performing their speeches in front of a panel of staff and teacher judges. The students were judged on content and delivery of their speech.

Bayles gave the senior address and spoke of his class accomplishments, including the record-breaking 43,000 hours of community service performed by the 2004 graduating class. He spoke of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and how it affected the students. He reminded the students that the one thing that bonded them in difficult times was their school. "We live in a time that is desperately in need of strength and unity," he said.
