CV High grad CJ Howard carries the Olympic Torch

June 18, 2004

'CJ Howard, the Crescenta High graduate and former long distance runner who lost a foot to cancer, did his bit for the United States of America in the 2004 Olympic Games on Wednesday.

Howard carried the Olympic Torch for two blocks in downtown Los Angeles as part of the worldwide torch relay that eventually ends in Athens, Greece this summer for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Howard was one of about 480 people who carried the Olympic Torch across the USA. He was picked for the honor after his mother and a former girl friend wrote short essays to the Olympics organization nominating him for the honor.

Howard was an all star runner at Crescenta Valley High, winning the 2002 Pacific League title in the 3,200 meter event in his senior year.

His running career was cut short at the University of California at Irvine when it was discovered that he had osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, and had to have his left foot amputated in the spring of 2003.
