'Root Beer Bandits' ride into Falcon Theatre before sundown

"The Root Beer Bandits," an old-fashioned musical comedy for kids

with original songs and lively dances, opens at 1 p.m. today at The

Falcon Theatre in Burbank.

Polly Peppercorn, a young delivery girl for the Pony Express, is

delivering her last letter to the Sheriff of Sarsaparilla City when

two outlaws tiptoe into town to steal the city's root beer. Comedy

and chaos ensue in this high-paced vaudevillian show for children,

including a chase, a hoedown, a surprise ending and a sing-off at

high noon.

Lori Marshall and Joseph Leo Bwarie share credit for the book and

lyrics. The music is by Rachael Lawrence, and it is directed by

Bwarie.

Shows are at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. Sundays. The final

show is at 1 p.m. Sept. 5. Tickets are $12, $10 for 12 and younger.

'PASSAGES' OPENING AT WAX POETIC

Wax Poetic salon and art gallery is showing the work of Los

Angeles painter Anahid Boghosian in an exhibit called "Passages."

The works are abstract visions of torsos -- collages of colors and

conflicting emotions representing the person within.

Boghosian is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Los Angeles.

The exhibit continues through Aug. 20. The salon and gallery is at

CONCERT LAUDS AMERICAN MUSIC, WORDS

American music is the theme for the opening concert of the

Pasadena Pops Orchestra's summer season at 7:30 tonight at Descanso

Gardens in La Canada Flintridge.

Titled "From Sea to Shining Sea," the concert will feature special

guest Billy Collins, U.S. poet laureate, sharing some of his works.

The Side Street Strutters, the swinging ragtime and jazz band that

performs regularly at Disneyland, will jazz up the evening with a

repertoire that ranges from New Orleans Dixieland and blues to big

band swing and popular standards.

Los Angeles Opera baritone Cedric Berry will sing American-themed

songs by Aaron Copland.

Also, composer and pianist Alan Steinberger will perform the world

premiere of his tone poem with the orchestra.

Rachael Worby conducts the orchestra.

Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive in La Canada

Flintridge. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for picnics, Catering and table

service are available from Patina, or guests may bring their own

picnic dinners and wine. Tickets range from $19 to $65. For
