Children were clamoring for ice cream Monday at Cold Stone Creamery,

even though the store at 901 W. Glenoaks Blvd. wasn't open. All of

Mark Keppel Elementary School's 45 first-grade and special-education

students spent their last day of school walking to the new ice-cream

shop, where store owners Michael and Melina Issakhanian treated them

to free ice cream as workers who were still training furiously

prepared the customized orders. The students had initiated a

recycling program, raising about $93, with the intent of using their

money to visit the ice-cream shop on their last day of school,

teacher Caroline Williams said. But the last day of school, which was

Monday, did not coincide with the store's opening Thursday. Michael

Issakhanian invited the children over anyway and refused their money,

Williams said. The money will instead go to buying new books for the

school.
