Last year, Bradbury was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk
of Fame. He was also the subject of a new biography by Jerry Weist
last year called "Bradbury: An Illustrated Life: A Journey to Far
Bradbury was awarded the 2000 Medal for Distinguished Contribution
to American Letters by the National Book Foundation.

Contract approved to secure college buildings
NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- Glendale Community College's board has hired
a company to install a security system at four buildings on campus.
The $53,610 contract with Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls will
secure the Camino Real, Cimmarusti Science Center, Santa Barbara and
Arroyo Seco buildings. The money will come out of Measure G funds.
Measure G is a voter-approved bond that gave the college $98 million
to spend on capital improvements.
The board also hired the SimplexGrinnell company to provide
$61,242 in fire alarm equipment maintenance and monitoring services.
CV Town Council gets park grant
LA CRESCENTA -- The Crescenta Valley Town Council has received a
$7,500 grant from the Metropolitan Water District to build a small
park at Foothill Boulevard and Briggs Avenue.
The money will help fund a small park next to the Crescenta Valley
Water District offices, 2700 Foothill Blvd. The small park,
tentatively named "Friendship Park," will feature pine trees, stone
landscaping and a small footbridge.
No date has been set for the park's construction.
Lockyer to speak at Kiwanis meeting
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- California Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer will
speak at the La Canada Kiwanis Club meeting July 21.
The program begins with lunch at noon, and Lockyer will begin his
talk at 12:45 p.m. His topic will be announced at a later date.
The meeting is at Van de Kamp hall at Descanso Gardens, 1418
Descanso Drive. The cost of the lunch is $11.

Faculty honored by GCC Board of Trustees
NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- The Glendale Community College Board of
Trustees recognized two staff members with awards during its meeting
Sid Kolpas, professor of mathematics and president-elect of the
Academic Senate, received this year's Distinguished Faculty Award.
Kolpas has been an educator for 34 years.
Jeanette Stirdivant, division chair for college services, a
counselor and a professor, received the William J. Parker Exceptional
Service Award. Stirdivant has been a faculty member at GCC for 25
