Area softball squads ready for nationals

The So Cal Sliderz -- a local travel softball team featuring La

Crescenta residents Kelsey Brumm and Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo and

coached by Glendale Assistant Police Chief Ron DePompa -- will be

joining 95 other teams in the Amateur Softball Assn. of America

Girls' 14-and-under Fastpitch National Championship, which begins

today and runs through Sunday in Midland, Texas.

American Pastime -- a travel softball team based in Chino, but

featuring local residents Baillie Kirker and Kyle Mulligan -- will be

competing in the 80-team ASA Girls' 12-and-under Fastpitch National

Championship, scheduled for today through Sunday in Moline, Ill.

The two teams met in the 40-team 2003 ASA 12-and-under Western

Nationals in Manteca, with American Pastime winning two of three.

American Pastime finished 7-1 to qualify for the nationals at the

12-and-under level, and the Sliderz posted a 7-2 mark to secure a

national berth.

American Pastime is in a pool with the Arizona Hotshots of Tempe,

Ariz., the Vienna Stars of Vienna, Va., and the Orion Express of

Orion, Ill.
