Aussie men's hoops team finishes ninth

The Australian men's basketball team, which is coached by 1971

Crescenta Valley High graduate Brian Goorjian, recorded a 98-77

victory against New Zealand on Tuesday to take ninth at the 2004

Summer Olympics in Athens.

Guard Shane Heal made an Olympic-record nine three-pointers for

Australia, which took fourth in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. The

34-year-old Heal made nine of his first 10 three-point attempts.

Locals swimmers fare well in August meets

La Crescenta residents Lukas and Zachary Taylor competed in two

events in August.

Lukas represented the Southern California Swimming's Western Zone

All-Star Team in Redding. The event was held Aug. 9-14.

He placed second in the 100-meter butterfly, 200 freestyle, 200

freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. Taylor finished third in the 50

butterfly.

At the Southern California Junior Olympics, which was held Aug.

3-8, Lukas took first in the 100 freestyle. He was also second in the

50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley and third in the

50 freestyle.

Zachary, 13, made the consolation finals in the 13- to 14-year-old

division of the Junior Olympics. He placed 11th in the 1,500-meter

freestyle event, 12th in the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley

and 14th in the 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle.

Zachary got eighth as part of the 200- and 400 freestyle relays,

ninth in the 800 freestyle relays and sixth in the 200 medley relay.

Championship trophy on display in Montrose

The World Series trophy won by the North San Gabriel Valley

All-Star baseball team will be on display through Saturday at

Landry's Sporting Goods, 2271 Honolulu Ave., Montrose.

North San Gabriel Valley, which featured eight local players and

was coached by Crescenta Valley High Coach Phil Torres, won the 36th

annual Babe Ruth World Series on Saturday in the 16- to 19-year-old

division with an 8-2 win against Worcester, Mass.

It marked the fifth time that North San Gabriel Valley won the

championship since 1973.

Boys' water polo team to host fundraiser

The Glendale High boys' water polo team will hold a fundraiser

from 8 to 10 a.m. Sept. 4 at the Glendale High School pool, 1440 E.

Broadway, Glendale. One-third of the donations will be given to the

American Heart Association and Cancer Society.
