Boy hit by car comes out of coma, recovering

August 26, 2004

A Glendale boy suffering from a fractured skull after being struck by

a car last week awoke from his coma and was taken out of emergency

care at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, police said.

The 11-year-old boy, whose name was not released by Glendale

Police, was hit by an oncoming car Friday evening in the 1100 block

of Allen Avenue while trying to run away from alleged bullies, Det.

Jeff Newton said.

Two other Glendale boys, both believed to be 11, were taking turns

punching the injured boy, when he escaped and skated into the street

to evade the alleged bullies, Newton said. The boy was wearing tennis

shoes that had wheels attached to them.

The driver -- a Glendale man -- was not at fault in the crash,

police said.

Police are still investigating the case, including checking with

Glendale Unified School District to see if the alleged assailants

have a history of bullying, Newton said.

Once the investigation is complete, police will submit it to Los

Angeles County District Attorney's Pasadena Juvenile branch to be

considered for criminal prosecution, Newton said.
