COUNCIL WANTS

AFFORDABLE HOUSING INFO

WHAT HAPPENED

The council asked city staff to do more research on the affordable

housing requirement for the San Fernando redevelopment zone.

WHAT IT MEANS

In August, the council changed the zoning for the San Fernando

corridor to allow for residential developments. Because the area is a

redevelopment zone, 15% of all residential projects must be

affordable housing. The city can also allow developers to build

off-site affordable complexes or pay the city's Housing Authority to

fulfill the requirement, but if the affordable housing is built

outside of the redevelopment zone, the requirement doubles. The City

Council was debating how much to charge developers to have the

Housing Authority complete the requirement, but council members asked

staff to do more research on affordable housing and bring back

another report.

VOTE

No vote was required.

MONTROSE LIGHTS PUT

OUT FOR BID

WHAT HAPPENED

The council approved specifications for the Montrose street

lighting project.

WHAT IT MEANS

City staff will accept bids for the project, which will put new

street lights on Honolulu Avenue in Montrose between Verdugo Road and

Las Palmas Avenue. Construction is expected to begin in January, with

the work completed by the end of June. City officials expect the job

to cost about $500,000. Councilman Dave Weaver voted against the

specifications. He believes the project should be included in the

normal budget process.

VOTE

The council voted 4-1 to approve the specifications, with Weaver

dissenting.
