Monte Vista Kicks Off School Year with a Picnic

October 01, 2004|By Robin Goldsworthy

The Monte Vista Elementary School community enjoyed games, food and each other's company at last Friday's annual picnic sponsored by the school's PTA. From 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24, friends, teachers and families gathered on the school's lower field, many bringing a picnic dinner and dessert to be shared. The event was emceed by Monte Vista parents Mark Miller and Vito Palazzolo.

Brightly colored blankets were scattered on the lawn as children whizzed by on scooters loaned out by the school. Music, supplied by parent Phil Sutphin, played in the background as parents took the opportunity to swap summer stories. Neither parents nor kids escaped a dousing from the water balloon toss, despite how gingerly the bulging balloons were lobbed. Afterward, Popsicles were passed out to the wet and the dry participants.

As darkness began to fall, PTA Co-president Monna Johnson thanked everyone for coming and offered a reminder that the school's Back-to-School Night would be Sept. 30.
