Rebuttal to Prop. 66

October 01, 2004

I was disturbed and appalled by the misleading information presented by Capt. Tim Peters of Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station ("Voters Go to Bat on Three Strikes Law," La Cañada Valley Sun, Sept. 23).

By voting YES on Prop 66, it only 'allows' for a re-sentencing hearing, for non-serious and non-violent felons. It does NOT open the flood gates and would NOT automatically release thousands of violent criminals to terrorize our communities. Prop 66 would ONLY restore the original intent of the voters to the first three strikes initiative.

On a re-sentencing hearing, the judge would be able to REVIEW all prior convictions and subsequently that prisoner would be enhanced, by law, for each and every prior conviction. Voting YES on Prop 66 would still mean that violent felons would receive at least 5 year enhancements for each and every serious or violent prior conviction. Murderers, rapists, etc., would STILL be doing eons of years upon years, most likely a life sentence.

Voters: don't be misled by fear and scare tactics; read it for yourself!! Check out the real info on www.yes66.org. The opponents of Prop 66 are mainly law enforcement and prison guard unions with the intent to maintain job security and the building of more prisons which California far exceeds any other state. Does it make sense for someone convicted of petty theft to serve a sentence that far exceeds someone convicted of 1st degree murder?

Yes on Prop 66 would help restore our economy and bring the meaning back to the term "Justice." Every other state has revised their three strikes law EXCEPT California, and when compared to the crime rates of other states, CA is lower! Obviously, three strikes how it's written and applied today has had no effect what so ever on the crime rate...so WHY are we paying astronomical amounts to keep petty crimes incarcerated for life?? Don't listen to propaganda sponsored by the big $, read it for yourselves! Vote YES ON PROP 66!
