Local church gets a new name

One local church has changed its name to give it a more modern

reputation and to reflect its merger with another congregation.

The First Baptist Church of Montrose changed its name last week to

Light on the Corner. People might have had misconceptions about the

word Baptist, said one long-time congregant.

"Lots of people thought it was very old fashioned and very common

with churches in the '40s and '50s. It gives people the wrong

impression," said Barbara Summers, who has been attending the church

for 50 years. "One of the misconceptions people have is that Baptists

are very strict and that we don't have any fun, when in fact you will

never meet friendlier people than here."

The name change was also prompted by the church's merger with

Church at Angeles Crest in April. The 40-member congregation did not

have a home of its own and was meeting in various locations each

month. When its pastor asked if they could use the former First

Baptist location for its sermons, they were invited to become part of

the flock.

The new name was a good way to start anew and welcome the new

worshippers, Summers said. The church now has about 100 congregants.

"We want to be a light for everyone in Montrose and we are on the

corner, so this is a good name for us," she said.

Light on the Corner has services at 10:45 a.m. Sundays at 1911

Waltonia Drive in Montrose. For more information, call 249-4806.
