It's not often you find competitors who are not sure they want to

win.

That might be because Wilson Middle School students faced this

choice Friday -- to win tug-of-war bragging rights or to get dunked

in a 1 1/2 -foot deep pit full of muddy water.

their gym clothes to take part in the school's 30th annual

tug-of-war.

The contest pits seventh- and eighth-grade homeroom classes

against each other, and some walk away jubilant while others walk

away jubilantly wet and muddy.

"We added this as just one of those fun activities," teacher

Dennis Oliver said. "High school, college students come back and talk

about this. It's one of the things they remember."

One student said she was not so sure of whether she wanted to

experience the pit.

"Half yes, half no," 12-year-old Laura Tagmazian said, when asked

if she wanted to win.

Sevak Petrosyan, 13, said he didn't want to fall in and lose, but

his friend Edward Narsisyan, 12, protested.

"I want to fall into the pit. That's the whole reason why we have

the tug of war," Edward said.
