Steve Walters, 55, died Oct. 29 in a bicycle accident in Arizona.

Steve graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1967 and from Occidental College in 1971. At Occidental, he ran track, becoming an All-American in the 200-meter sprint. He held a 100-meter record for some years.

After graduating, Steve taught high school math and coached high school and junior college track and cross-country.

In 1981, Steve married and moved to Arizona. He continued to teach while earning his doctorate in secondary education and exercise science.

Steve and his wife, Ann, had two sons, Dan, born in 1985, and John, born in 1987.

Steve joined the faculty of Prescott College in Prescott, Ariz., in 1990, teaching in the adult degree program. In 1997, he became the dean of the Adult Degree and Master of Arts Programs, a position he continued to hold when he died. He was also dean of the college's Teacher Education Program.

Besides his family, cycling was Steve's passion. He raced competitively at the state and national level and attained the second-highest ranking from the United States Cycling Federation possible for a non-professional cyclist. He was the Arizona state road racing and hill climbing champion in his age group many times, and had just won again in September.

He was on his normal morning ride when he died.

Steve is survived by his wife, Ann, and their two sons, Dan and John, all of Prescott; his mother, Vivian Mills of La Crescenta, his sisters Carol Brem of Yorba Linda and Donna Thonis of Ventura, as well as his nephew Matt Brem and nieces Lindy Brem and Dasha Thonis.

His father, John H. Walters, and brother James preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Steve Walters Scholarship Fund at Prescott College, (928-350-4501), which will benefit students in Prescott's adult degree and graduate programs. A celebration of Steve's life was held Nov. 4 in Prescott.
