Replacement for Gomez

January 21, 2005

Of course the Glendale City Council should appoint a replacement for Judge Gus Gomez and, of course, since he became famous as a result of my efforts to get the city to follow the flag code, I believe they should appoint me. Actually, it would be more likely for Caruso and General Growth to settle their differences than for that to happen.

There is another alternative, though, that would serve the voters of Glendale well. Selected by lot, each Tuesday, city council meetings would have one of the council candidates serve as a council member. The city attorney could have us sign something that would keep some of the crazy people from doing any real damage to our fair city. This would allow the voters to see the candidates in action. The council's excuse that there are too many intricate details to know is lame. With only one vote, the candidate could not pass anything. All the candidates I have seen so far are far less dysfunctional than our current council, and I am sure we know as much or more about some of the problems facing our council as some present council members. Who knows? Someone may even have a solution to some of them.

So, City Council, let us get in the driver's seat for one day a week. Let the people see us in action and help them decide who to vote for ... unless you're afraid we'll do a better job.
