GCC earns victory in season opener

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 10, El Camino College 4: The Vaqueros

produced 12 hits Thursday, as they won their season opener in the

South Coast Tournament.

Blake Gailen started on the mound and went six innings, scattering

two runs. Freshman Clay Young pitched the final three innings to earn

the save.

GCC's Bill Spottiswood went two for four with a double and four

runs batted in and teammate Daniel Gomez was four for four. Daniel

Lee and Gabe Gonzalez each had two hits and drove in two runs for

GCC.

The Vaqueros resume play in the tournament at 2 p.m. Sunday

against L.A. Harbor College at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

GIRLS' WATER POLO

Hoover 5, South Pasadena 3: Lottie Cassidy and Shana Palencia had

two goals each for the Tornadoes (13-13) in Thursday's nonleague home

match.

Claire Hawley also scored for Hoover, which next plays visiting

Glendale at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in a Pacific League match.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Pasadena 6, Glendale 0: Natalie Diaz and Erika Akopyan each

provided good performances for the Nitros on Thursday in a Pacific

League home loss.

The Nitros (2-12, 1-5 in league) next play host Muir at 3:15 p.m.

Tuesday.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Alemany 61, St. Francis 58: Chris Johnson had a team-high 19

points for the Golden Knights in Wednesday's Mission League home

contest.

Kevin Peterson had 15 points and Steve Polchow had 13 for the

Golden Knights (15-5, 3-4 in league).

St. Francis will meet visiting Chaminade at 7 p.m. today in

another league contest.
