LIBRARY BOOKS

The City Council approved the transfer of $150,000 from the Library Division's salary account to its book account. The amount

will be a surplus at the end of the fiscal year because of the number

of unfilled positions.

WHAT IT MEANS

The money will be used to buy books in foreign languages and for

English language learners. It will also be used to buy books and

materials for the library's teen center, which helps at-risk

students. Councilman Bob Yousefian was absent.

STREET-LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS

The City Council approved an increase in the Brand Boulevard

Reconstruction Project contingency amount by $460,437 to pay for

upgrades to street lights. Staff members recommended the upgrades to

street lighting be carried out concurrently with street and sidewalk

improvements. Eleven 60-foot poles equipped with two 1,000-watt bulbs will be replaced with 38-foot poles, each containing one 400-watt

bulb.

WHAT IT MEANS

By carrying out the street-lighting improvements while Brand

Boulevard is being reconstructed, the city will save about $400,000.
