Winners are violinist Laurel Diskin of Cal State L.A., getting the
Hoeft Memorial Scholarship; pianist Jae Hong Chung of Crescenta
Valley High School, the Blanche Bobbitt Piano Scholarship; cellist
Ruslan Biryukov of USC, the Wanda and Kenneth Hepler Scholarship; and
lyric soprano Jessica Owen of USC, Nellie Morris Terry and Francis
Paul Morris Vocal Scholarship.
Scholarships open to oceanography students
Local students are invited to apply for the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration undergraduate scholarship program.
About 110 college undergraduates will get up to $28,425 to support
their academic studies related to oceanic and atmospheric studies,
research, technology, policy, management, education activities and a
related internship.
Applications are due on May 23.
Hollings scholars will be selected from a broad range of
disciplines, including biological, life and agricultural sciences,
physical sciences, math, engineering and computer and information
sciences.

Program launched to up conversation in English
Turning New Corners, an organization committed to mentoring and
community partnerships, will launch its Speak English Day Camp
Sunday.
The Speak English Day Camp will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at
Urartu's Coffee, 119 N. Maryland Ave. The event will be an extension
of the organization's English Cafe, a weekly conversational English
class at which students improve their English with conversation.
Sunday's Speak English Day Camp will explore fairy tales from diverse
cultures. After the workshop, participants are invited to attend the
afternoon performance of "Mutts, Movement and Mother Goose,"
performed by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, at the Alex Theatre,
216 N. Brand Blvd.
