Women's Committee

June 17, 2005

The upper right hand column of the Crescenta Valley Sun, June 10 edition, on page A6, showed a picture.

The caption read "Winning Student Performs for School Board." The last sentence states that Jae Hong Chung was the winner of the Glendale Symphony Association's scholarship.

The Glendale Symphony Orchestra Association does not and has never given scholarships. A separate non-profit organization founded in 1959, the Women's Com-mittee of the GSOA does administers endowment and scholarship award funds. A total of eight funds are administer. This year four scholarships were given at a ceremony at Brand Park on April 29. The program was entitled Meet the Musicians. The public was invited to attend and hear these fantastic young musicians. The Women's Committee members are proud to be able to encourage these young musicians and appreciate the support they receive from their teachers, their schools, family members and the community.

Jue Hong Chung received the Blanche Bobbitt Piano Scholarship Award of $500. Ruslan Biryukov received the Wanda and Kenneth Hepler Scholarship of $600. The Hoeft Memorial Scholarship of $800 was awarded to Laurel Diskin. The Nellie Morris Terry and Francis Paul Morris Vocal Scholarship of $1,600 was awarded to Jessica Owen.

The article should have given credit to the 114 members of the Women's Committee of the GSOA. This committee has also been responsible for bringing a different section of symphony orchestra to every elementary school in the Glendale Unified School District for 29 years. Many students have learned to appreciate classical music and many have been inspired to pursue a musical career.

Further information may be obtained by calling Louise Foote, chairman of the Scholarship Committee, at 790-5947. Thank you.
