Locals Play in Annual Milligan All-Star Game

June 17, 2005

The season wasn't quite over for a couple of local high baseball players who participated in the 29th annual San Fernando Valley Bernie Milligan All-Star Baseball Game at Cal State Northridge last Saturday.

La CaƱada's Matt Sprowles and Andy Marquardt from St. Francis played for the East squad which was beaten by the West team, 10-3.

Sprowles, who will attend Loyola Marymount University in Westchester in the fall, hurled the second inning for the East. Despite his 10-2 record and 1.19 earned run average in Rio Hondo League play, Sprowles didn't dazzle the opposition as he gave up two runs, hit two batters and walked two.

Marquardt played four innings in the outfield, catching all four fly balls that were hit in his direction. He grounded out and walked in his only two at bats.

The soon-to-graduate Golden Knight was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers' organization last week in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, but will spend some time in college before attempting a career in professional baseball.

Trevor Bell, the Crescenta Valley High all star, past up playing in the game, but watched it from the stands. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and will report to the team's Mesa, Ariz. facility for rookie ball following graduation later this month.
